Bernard constantly worked to maintain and upgrade the Duno. Most changes he made himself, although he did occasionally employ some help.

In 1934 the original boathouse was no longer serviceable, so a new one was purchased for a cost of fl.2290.00 ($1431.00). It contained the same set-up with a full workshop for repairs.

The Duno was always equipped with the best engine. As soon as technology invented a more powerful machine, Bernard would get one for his boat. In 1935 he installed an American made “Lycoming”, model UE 65 hp marine engine. Cost: fl. 1481.00 ($925.00)

In 1936 the Duno was professionally refinished using Valspar varnish and bottom paint. The cost was fl.95.00 ($59.00)

In 1953 Bernard came to the conclusion that the propeller was not driving the boat as fast as he would like. So he changed from a 14” to a 16” diameter propeller. Although this seemed a simple upgrade, it did involve some modifications to the drive shaft, and the location of the propeller.

At some time between WW I and WWII, Bernard wondered whether the 30’ length of the boat could be hindering its potential for speed. So he cut off about 3 –4 ‘ feet from the back.
